Bristol North West is a diverse community containing wealthy suburbs like Westbury on Trym but also areas where Council House provision predominates such as Lockleaze and Southmead. After being well served by Labour’s Doug Naysmith the constituency went Tory in the 2010 general election. The local MP Charlotte Leslie has become the Government’s Big Society Tsar despite having become embroiled in some of the controversy concerning St. Ursula’s/Oasis Academy. Doug may have retired from Parliament but he ably represents the people of Avonmouth having been elected as a Councillor in 2010. Another long-serving popular local Councillor is Jenny Smith, who has represented the people of Southmead for many years. Horfield Sports Centre was built under the last Labour Government and Labour Council, and is a very popular local amenity, with two swimming pools including an 25-metre, eight lane sub-regional competition pool with a moveable floor, plus a teaching pool. There are a number of Secondary schools in the area: Orchard School, Henbury School, Oasis Academy Brightstowe, St Bede”s Catholic College, and Fairfield High School. Southmead Hospital is one of the largest employers in the locality, and is currently being rebuilt as a brand new state of the art super hospital, at a cost of £430million. The final stage of the rebuild will be when the doors are officially opened in 2014, as an 800 bed hospital. It will then be one of the most environmentally-friendly buildings in the country.
